Excuse letter for school

A short, polite excuse letter from a parent or guardian to a class adviser or teacher, explaining why a student was absent or will be absent: fever, a medical check-up, a family event or a trip. It states the dates, the reason, says who to contact, and asks that the student be allowed to take missed quizzes and submit work late. It is the format DepEd schools and most private schools in the Philippines expect, and it works for Malaysian schools with a change of names.

How to use these templates

  1. Note the exact dates missed and the section and adviser's name from the student's class card or group chat.
  2. Open the template and tell the AI the facts: "my son Miguel, Grade 8 Sampaguita, was absent 3 to 4 November with fever, medical certificate attached".
  3. Ask for what you need: to take the missed quiz, to submit the project late, or to be excused from PE for a week.
  4. Print and sign it, or save as PDF and send it through the school's messaging channel if the adviser allows that.

Writing an excuse letter a teacher will accept

  • Send it on the day the student returns, or before a planned absence. Schools usually count an unexplained absence against attendance until a letter arrives.
  • Attach a medical certificate for absences of three days or more; many schools require it for the absence to be marked excused.
  • Address it to the class adviser by name, with a copy to the subject teacher if a major exam was missed.
  • Keep it to one page and one reason. If the absence is long, give the expected return date and ask how the student can keep up.
  • For a planned family trip, write before leaving and ask for the lessons the child will miss, which teachers appreciate far more than a letter afterwards.

Who signs an excuse letter?

The parent or legal guardian. A student of legal age can sign their own, but schools usually still want a parent's signature for minors.

Is a medical certificate always required?

No. Most schools accept a parent's letter for one or two days. Beyond that, or for missed exams, a medical certificate or other proof is usually needed.

Can the letter be sent by message or email?

Many advisers accept a photo of the signed letter in the class group chat or by email. Check the school's policy, since some still want the original.
