What Philippine employers look for on a resume

  • A 2x2 photo, date of birth and civil status are still common on Philippine resumes and expected by many local employers, but foreign and BPO companies usually do not need them. Drop them when applying abroad or through an ATS.
  • Character references matter here more than in most countries. Choose a former supervisor, a professor or a barangay official who will actually pick up the phone, and list their position and company.
  • Write the certification line and sign it. Hiring officers in government and in many schools look for it, and an unsigned copy can be sent back.
  • Senior high strand and college honours (cum laude, Dean's Lister) belong under education. TESDA certificates and the Civil Service eligibility go under a separate heading so they are easy to spot.
  • Keep it to one page for fresh graduates and two at most for ten years of experience. Print on short bond (Letter) paper, which is what most offices here keep in the tray.
