Resume format for Malaysia
A two-page resume in the style Malaysian employers and JobStreet recruiters are used to: a short profile, a languages line (Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin or Tamil, with spoken and written levels), education with CGPA, work experience with results, skills, and two referees at the end. Personal particulars such as IC number, age and nationality are optional and sit in a single compact line if you include them. Tell the AI your field and years of experience and it rewrites the sample for you in British spelling.

How to use these templates
- Choose the Malaysian resume for local employers and the ATS-friendly one for multinationals that screen applications with software.
- Click "Use this template" and describe yourself, for example "accounts executive in Petaling Jaya, three years, SQL Accounting and UBS, applying to a listed company".
- Fill the languages line honestly with levels, add your CGPA if it is above 3.0, and ask two referees, usually a former manager and a lecturer, before naming them.
- Download as PDF for JobStreet, LinkedIn and email, or as Word to keep editing.
What Malaysian recruiters expect
- Languages are a real selling point in Malaysia. List every language with a level for speaking and writing, and put Mandarin or Tamil first if the posting asks for it.
- IC number, date of birth, race and religion used to be standard. Many employers no longer need them, and multinationals prefer you leave them out; include only what the application form asks for.
- Fresh graduates should list CGPA, final-year project and internship with the company name, since recruiters here use them to shortlist.
- Referees are usually named on the resume itself rather than "available on request". Two is enough: a direct manager and a lecturer or a client.
- Print on A4, which every Malaysian office stocks, and keep the file name as your name and the role so it is easy to find in a recruiter's inbox.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put my IC number on my resume?
Only if the employer or a government portal asks for it. For most private employers your name, phone, email and city are enough, and leaving the IC out reduces the risk if the file is forwarded.
One page or two?
Fresh graduates fit on one page. With five or more years of experience, two pages is normal in Malaysia and recruiters do not mind.
Is a photo expected?
It is common but not required. Add a plain head-and-shoulders photo for customer-facing or hospitality roles; skip it for applications to multinationals and for any online form that uploads the resume into an ATS.
Should the resume be in English or Bahasa Malaysia?
English for private companies, especially in KL, Penang and Johor. Government and GLC applications sometimes ask for Bahasa Malaysia; the AI can translate the finished resume if you ask it to.
